FAQ
Common questions about NØISE's audio behavior.
Why does NØISE change my system audio settings?
Every time the engine starts, NØISE sets the macOS default input and output to the devices it is about to use — AVAudioEngine reads its sample rate from the system default, so without this the engine could start at the wrong rate. This happens with one interface for both as well as with separate devices, and the defaults are not put back when you quit: if you want your old ones, pick them again in System Settings. On iPad there are no system defaults to change: the audio session owns the route.
Can I use Bluetooth headphones?
Bluetooth audio has significant latency (roughly 100–200 ms), which makes real-time guitar monitoring impractical. Use wired headphones or speakers for the best experience.
Why is there latency when I play?
Some latency is unavoidable with digital audio. To minimize it: use a dedicated audio interface (not built-in audio), use the lowest buffer size your computer can handle, and keep the FX chain simple.
What audio interfaces are supported?
NØISE works with any Core Audio–compatible device on macOS, including Audient EVO4, IK Multimedia iRig, Focusrite Scarlett series, PreSonus AudioBox, built-in MacBook audio, and many more.
Can I use an aggregate device?
Yes, but aggregate devices add latency. Only use one if you need to combine devices that can't otherwise be used together — see Sample-rate mismatch for the exact steps.
How does NØISE work on an iPad?
The same app, one purchase for Mac and iPad. The difference is how the iPad routes audio: a USB audio interface is input and output at once — plug one in and NØISE takes it over live, pull it and the app hands back to the built-in hardware. Without an interface the built-in microphone feeds the tuner, the chord detector and the practice games only; it never comes out of the speakers, so there is no feedback loop — and it hears the room, band and drums included, so it is not a signal to play through the amp. The band always plays. Because the iPad has one audio session at one sample rate, a sample-rate mismatch cannot happen there.
