Practice

Scale practice

A note-finding exercise on the fretboard — play the right pitch, anywhere on the neck.

Scale practice is an exercise for finding notes on the fretboard: it names the next note of a scale, rings it on the neck, and you have to play that pitch (any octave, any string) on your actual guitar. It's not chord-based and not a rhythm exercise — pure single-note, scale-position training.

Scale practice setup: choosing key, scale and starting position

Opening it

Click LEARN › Practice in the SCALE module (the band is held while it is open — the footer's DRUMS · JAM · METRO keys bring a lane in, see Play along). No keyboard shortcut — mouse/click only; close with ESC (the key top-right or the keyboard), or CLOSE once a round is done.

Setup

One plate, titled SCALE PRACTICE, with the scale and tuning beside the title. The setup is two rows: KEY (a 12-note keyboard) and SCALE (MAJOR, MINOR, MAJOR PENTATONIC, MINOR PENTATONIC, BLUES); then three ON/OFF pairs — RANDOM, LOOP, ROUND TRIP (the last two are dimmed while RANDOM is on) — and SHOW, which labels the dots with DEGREES or NOTE NAMES. The status screen reads CLICK A ROOT NOTE TO START: START runs the box at the lowest root on the low E string, or click any root note on the neck to start there. There is no countdown — the first target appears at once.

Playing

Scale practice in play, showing the target note and fretboard

The target note, with its octave, large on the status screen, with chevrons that light up when the note you're playing is higher or lower than the target. Play the correct pitch and it turns green with a short confirmation chime; play a wrong one and it says what you actually played. The 24-fret neck below shows the box, the target ringed in green, with DEGREES or NOTE NAMES on the dots if you switched them on. The setup dims while a round runs.

Progress shows as "NOTE n OF m" in sequential/loop/round-trip modes, or "CORRECT: n" in random mode; the START key reads STOP while the round runs.

Finishing

LOOP and RANDOM run until you stop. ROUND TRIP goes up the box and back down, then finishes. Otherwise a round ends when the box is done: COMPLETED! with your average time per note, the key reads PLAY AGAIN (the same box), and CLOSE sits beside it.
